An Open Letter
To: Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley, Rep. Nunn
From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA
January 21
I am writing as your constituent because I am deeply alarmed by a series of actions and statements by President Donald Trump that I believe cross a constitutional red line and show that he is unfit for office. I am especially concerned by reports that the Pentagon has placed approximately 1,500 active-duty U.S. Army soldiers on standby following the President’s threat to invoke the Insurrection Act in response to civilian protests. The idea of preparing to use the U.S. military against Americans exercising their constitutional rights is terrifying and dangerous, and it is something I never expected to see in this country. I am also alarmed by the President’s repeated insistence that the United States must take control of Greenland, declaring that anything less than U.S. ownership is “unacceptable” and refusing to rule out coercive means. This has provoked outrage and fear among our NATO allies and is destabilizing one of the most important security alliances in the world. Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen warned that this crisis represents NATO’s greatest challenge since its founding, and even Republican members of Congress have warned that any U.S. military action against Greenland could mean war with NATO itself. What makes this even more disturbing is that the President has reportedly linked this territorial aggression to personal grievance over not receiving a Nobel Peace Prize, suggesting that major foreign policy decisions are being driven by ego and resentment rather than by national security judgment. Taken together, these are not just reckless comments or bad policy choices. They show a pattern of behavior that includes threatening to use the military against Americans, making coercive territorial demands against an allied democracy, and allowing personal grievance to shape major decisions that affect global stability and the safety of millions of people. As a constituent, I believe this pattern raises profound questions about judgment, stability, and fitness for office. I do not think it is responsible or safe for Congress to ignore what is happening and hope it somehow resolves itself. I am asking you to publicly support the opening of a formal impeachment inquiry and to use your authority in Congress to compel testimony and documents so the American people can understand exactly what is being planned and why. I do not make this request lightly. But I believe that when a president threatens civilian safety, undermines our alliances, and appears driven by personal grievance rather than the national interest, Congress has a duty to act. Please act before rhetoric becomes deployment and instability becomes irreversible harm. I ask you to help this country avoid further harm and the loss of life, and I trust that you understand the gravity of this moment and the responsibility before Congress.
