Oppose H.R. 9495's Due Process Violations and Rights Infringement
To: Sen. Blumenthal, Sen. Murphy
From: A constituent in Wethersfield, CT
November 27
I urge you to oppose H.R. 9495, the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act. While the intent to support Americans wrongfully detained abroad is admirable, the provisions terminating the tax-exempt status of organizations designated as "terrorist supporting" raise significant concerns about due process and infringe on constitutional rights. The bill allows the Treasury Secretary sweeping authority to unilaterally revoke an organization's tax exemption based on an overly broad definition, without requiring concrete evidence that the organization directly enabled terrorism. This could unjustly target legitimate non-profit groups based on tenuous associations. Additionally, the limited judicial review permitted undermines robust oversight and violates principles of fairness and transparency. Rather than stripping away fundamental rights, a more prudent approach would be strengthening existing laws against material support for terrorism while respecting civil liberties. I encourage you to stand against this bill's overreach and protect the constitutional freedoms that define American democracy.
