No Blank Checks for Political Allies: Defend our Tax Dollars

To: Sen. Merkley, Sen. Wyden, Rep. Salinas

From: A constituent in Sheridan, OR

May 19

I am writing to express my deep outrage over the creation of the $1.776 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund" announced by the Department of Justice on May 18, 2026. This fund is an unconscionable misuse of taxpayer dollars. It was created not through an act of Congress, but as part of a self-dealing settlement in which President Trump dropped his own lawsuit against the IRS — a lawsuit brought against a government he controls — in exchange for a taxpayer-funded slush fund to reward his political allies. The settlement reportedly also cancels IRS audits of Trump, his family, and his businesses. This is a staggering conflict of interest. The commission overseeing this fund is appointed by the Attorney General and can be dismissed by the President at will. There are no clear standards for who qualifies for payment. There is no meaningful independent oversight. This is not justice — it is a blank check written to political allies, paid for by hardworking Americans. I am calling on you to take immediate action: 1. Support or co-sponsor legislation to defund or dismantle this fund. 2. Demand full transparency on how claims will be evaluated and who receives payments. 3. Support judicial and congressional oversight of this settlement. The American people deserve a government that spends their money with integrity and accountability — not one that raids the Treasury to settle political scores.
