Reauthorize and Expand the Wildlife Crossing Pilot Program
Reauthorize the Wildlife Crossing Pilot Program in the next Surface Highway Transportation bill. Better yet just pass this as a stand alone bill, and fund it at a Minimum of $100 million a year for five years.
The current program has proven that purpose-built wildlife crossings reduce vehicle collisions with animals, protect biodiversity, and keep drivers safer. A five-year, $100 million annual commitment gives states and tribes the runway to plan, design, and build crossings that actually work at scale. One-time or underfunded pilots don't move the needle. This needs to be an ongoing program. All new roads should include wildlife crossings as part of the whole construction process.
Roads fragment habitat across the country, and every reauthorization cycle is a chance to fix that. Locking in sustained funding now means fewer collisions, lower costs for emergency responders, and healthier wildlife populations for decades to come. Please make this bill a priority.
