An Open Letter

To: Rep. Johnson, Sen. Rounds, Sen. Thune

From: A constituent in Keystone, SD

May 10

The actions undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security under Secretary Noem's leadership are deeply concerning and appear to violate both legal precedents and Congressional mandates. By refusing to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the United States despite a unanimous Supreme Court ruling, DHS is flouting the rule of law and the system of checks and balances. This brazen disregard for judicial authority sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the foundations of our democracy. Furthermore, DHS's refusal to allow asylum seekers to initiate legal processes and its indiscriminate deportations of individuals with valid legal status are direct violations of due process and human rights principles. Deporting students and protestors solely for exercising their First Amendment rights is an egregious overreach of power and an assault on civil liberties. The flagrant misuse of taxpayer funds, including the imminent depletion of immigration enforcement resources by July, demonstrates a lack of fiscal responsibility and accountability. Plans to dismantle critical agencies like FEMA also jeopardize the nation's ability to respond to natural disasters and safeguard its citizens. I urge you to take immediate action to rein in this rogue agency and ensure it operates within the bounds of the law and the Constitution. DHS's conduct under the current leadership is a stain on American values and threatens the very fabric of our democratic institutions. Decisive legislative and oversight measures are necessary to restore the integrity of this vital department and protect the rights and well-being of all people within our borders.
