Oppose unconstitutional plan to deport U.S. citizens abroad

To: Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley, Rep. Feenstra

From: A constituent in Sioux City, IA

April 17

The Trump administration's proposal to deport and incarcerate U.S. citizens in foreign prisons represents an alarming violation of constitutional rights and due process. Forcibly sending American citizens to be jailed overseas would strip them of their legal protections as U.S. nationals and subject them to potentially inhumane conditions without judicial oversight. This threatens the civil liberties that are fundamental to American democracy. Legal scholars across the political spectrum have condemned this idea as blatantly unconstitutional and illegal. There is no statutory authority that would allow the U.S. government to deport its own citizens for imprisonment abroad. Pursuing this course of action would overstep the bounds of executive power and undermine the system of checks and balances. As an elected representative, you have a duty to uphold the Constitution and safeguard the rights of all Americans, regardless of political affiliations. Bold action is needed to block this alarming overreach and reaffirm the nation's commitment to human rights and the rule of law. The American people are looking to you to be a voice of reason and moral leadership on this crucial issue. Forceful opposition is warranted to ensure this dangerous proposal never becomes reality.
