I am a homeowner and constituent in your district. I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to regulate homeowners insurance practices in Alabama and to support meaningful reforms that protect residents from unaffordable premium increases and arbitrary policy cancellations.
My original insurance company stopped servicing Alabama due to perceived natural-disaster risk. Since then, the remaining insurers have nearly tripled their premiums since 2024. As a direct result, my mortgage payment has increased by approximately $400 per month solely because of rising insurance costs. If this trend continues, I—and many others—will be forced out of homes we have worked hard to afford and maintain.
In 2025, three bills were introduced in Alabama aimed at addressing insurance regulation and catastrophe funding. All of them failed. Meanwhile, insurance companies continue to raise rates, reduce coverage, and withdraw from communities with little oversight or accountability. Homeowners are being left with no real choices and no real protections.
Housing stability is not a luxury—it is foundational to our economy, our communities, and our families’ well-being. When insurers are allowed to prioritize profits over people without reasonable regulation, the burden falls squarely on working families, seniors, and first-time homeowners who have done nothing wrong.
I am asking you to:
• Support legislation that limits excessive premium increases
• Prevent unjustified policy cancellations and market withdrawals
• Strengthen or create catastrophe funds to stabilize the insurance market
• Ensure transparency and accountability from insurance providers operating in Alabama
Elected officials have a responsibility to look out for the people they serve—not just powerful corporate interests or billionaires who are insulated from these consequences. Alabamians deserve leadership that treats housing security as a priority, not an afterthought.
Please let me know what steps you are taking to address this crisis. I will be watching closely and sharing your response with others in my community who are facing the same fears.
Thank you for your time and attention to this urgent matter.
