An Open Letter

To: Gov. Whitmer, Sen. Outman, Rep. Posthumus

From: A constituent in Rockford, MI

July 25

The Michigan House has introduced legislation to prohibit law enforcement officers from concealing their identities while on duty. This "Justice Wears No Mask" bill aims to foster transparency and accountability by ensuring officers are readily identifiable to the public they serve. Obscuring identity erodes trust in law enforcement and enables potential abuses of power to go unchecked. Clear visibility of an officer's name and badge number allows for proper oversight and redress of any misconduct issues. In the interests of upholding democratic principles and civilian rights, it is imperative that this common-sense measure receives robust support to strengthen community relations and evidence-based policing practices. The public deserves assurances that those empowered to use force are doing so responsibly and under scrutiny.
