Fair and transparent immigration proceedings for Kilmar Abrego Garcia

To: Rep. Self, Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Princeton, TX

April 20

The administration's continued attempts to portray Kilmar Abrego Garcia as a violent gang member are concerning given the lack of substantive evidence. The information released paints an incomplete picture, relying heavily on circumstantial details and unproven allegations. While previous interactions with law enforcement are documented, there do not appear to be any criminal convictions that would justify labeling him a hardened criminal. The protective order filed by his wife in 2021, which she later chose not to pursue, seems to have been an isolated incident that the couple worked through privately. Using this to brand him an "apparent woman beater," as the White House spokesperson did, is an unfair characterization that disregards the nuances of the situation. Furthermore, the traffic stop in 2022, where he was not charged with any crime, is being portrayed as potential human trafficking without clear justification. Asserting that he is definitively a gang member linked to MS-13 based on the limited information provided appears to be an overreach. Rather than launching personal attacks, the administration should focus on transparently addressing the issues surrounding Abrego Garcia's legal immigration proceedings and expediting his court-mandated return to the United States. Continuing to vilify him without due process raises concerns about the administration's commitment to justice and human rights. An objective review of the facts is warranted before such damaging labels are assigned.
