I just read the article "The New Farm Bill Doubles as the Biggest Cut to Food Aid in U.S. History" (https://finance.yahoo.com/economy/policy/articles/farm-bill-doubles-biggest-cut-163510281.html).
I am deeply concerned about the implications of the new Farm Bill, particularly regarding the cuts to SNAP food assistance, which have pushed 3.4 million Americans off the program. This represents the largest reduction to federal food assistance in history, and with rising grocery prices, this is a critical issue that must be addressed.
Additionally, I believe that the proposed "Save Our Bacon Act" is a mistake across many dimensions. It undermines states' abilities to set health, labeling, and disease prevention standards related to how animals are raised. This not only harms small American farmers who adhere to higher standards but also threatens U.S. national security by favoring large foreign corporations over local farms. Furthermore, it disregards the results of state elections and infringes upon states' rights to regulate the products they import. Most alarmingly, it will lead to terrible living conditions for hundreds of thousands of pigs and cows every year.
Please strongly support restoring funding for SNAP food assistance and oppose the "Save Our Bacon Act" to protect both our food systems and animal welfare.
