I am deeply concerned about the effects Texas SB 2623 and Texas HB 4726 would have on the community. The passage of these bills would be detrimental to 22 non-profits in the Houston area alone. Agencies that are working hard to help people improve their lives, including homeless people.
If these bills pass the result would be staggering: loss of services and closing of agencies.
I have worked with homeless populations and, in general, I believe that fear of the homeless is often unwarranted. That, coupled with the rigorous policies of entry and access that non-profit agencies have in place indicates to me that these bills are unwarranted and would be very likely to cause MORE harm to the community due to the lack of helpful, life-changing services to those who are struggling and striving to do better.
Thank you,
