I am writing to demand immediate action following the January 14, 2026 incident in Minneapolis where federal ICE agents launched flash-bang munitions and tear gas that hospitalized three children, including a 6-month-old infant who stopped breathing and lost consciousness.
Shawn and Destiny Jackson were driving with their six children when they became caught in protests against immigration enforcement operations. According to the parents, ICE agents threw tear gas bombs everywhere. A flash-bang device rolled under their vehicle and exploded with enough force to lift the truck off the ground, deploy airbags, lock the doors, and fill the interior with tear gas. The infant, a 7-year-old, and an 11-year-old required ambulance transport to a hospital. Destiny Jackson had to perform CPR on her baby.
The father reported arguing with officers for five minutes to call an ambulance, stating the officer knew children were in the car but refused to help. This family had never protested before. They were simply trying to drive home safely.
This incident represents a dangerous escalation in federal enforcement tactics. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has described armed, masked, undertrained ICE agents going door to door ordering people to point out where their neighbors of color live. The ACLU and ACLU of Minnesota filed a class action lawsuit on January 15 on behalf of individuals whose constitutional rights were violated by federal operatives in Minnesota.
Using military-grade weapons in civilian areas where families are present is reckless and illegal. These children suffered because agents deployed flash-bangs and tear gas without regard for innocent bystanders. No enforcement operation justifies endangering children or denying them emergency medical care.
I urge you to publicly condemn this incident, demand a full investigation with criminal charges where appropriate, and work to prohibit the use of flash-bangs and tear gas in areas where civilians and children are present. Federal agents must be held accountable when their actions harm innocent people.
