URGENT: Vote NO on H.J. Res. 140 – Protect the Boundary Waters

To: Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman

From: A constituent in Kennett Square, PA

April 15

As one of your constituents from [Your City, State], I am writing to urge you to vote NO on H.J. Res. 140, which seeks to overturn the 20-year mineral withdrawal protecting the Superior National Forest and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). I am deeply concerned about this resolution for the following reasons: Risk to Pristine Waters: Sulfide-ore copper mining carries a 100% track record of water pollution. Any toxic runoff in the Rainy River Watershed would flow directly into the BWCAW and Voyageurs National Park, causing irreversible damage to these world-class ecosystems. Economic Impact: The Boundary Waters supports a $13.5 billion outdoor recreation economy and thousands of sustainable jobs in Minnesota that depend on clean water and a healthy wilderness. Dangerous Precedent: Using the Congressional Review Act to overturn a public land order is an unprecedented maneuver that threatens the stability of public land protections across the entire country. Foreign Interests vs. American Resources: This resolution benefits foreign-owned mining companies at the expense of American public lands. Research indicates extracted minerals are likely to be processed abroad rather than bolstering domestic security. The Boundary Waters is a national treasure that must be preserved for future generations. I ask that you stand with your constituents and the American people by voting against this reckless resolution. Thank you for your time and for your service to our state.
