Proposal: Federal Law Securing Our Right to Bodily Autonomy and Medical Privacy
To: Sen. Padilla, Rep. Levin, Sen. Schiff
From: A constituent in Oceanside, CA
November 5
Now that the 2026 election has provided the Democratic Party with a majority in both the House and Senate, I am writing to urge you to move swiftly to codify our rights to bodily autonomy and private medical decisions in federal law. Trump’s SCOTUS appointees proved what we all feared for 50 years: that Roe v Wade was not a secure enough decision to excuse lawmakers from creating a full law securing people’s rights to their own bodies and medical choices. Between the deaths of multiple women due to miscarriage-caused sepsis or other pregnancy complications, arrests of women for the “crime” of having a heartbreaking miscarriage they had no way to prevent, and the ongoing attacks against the 1% of the population who are trans gender and seek only to live as their true selves through age-appropriate gender-affirming care, it is far past time to secure our rights to make our own medical decisions without government interference. Call it the Right to BAMS (Bodily Autonomy and Medical Services) Bill - or something similarly catchy - and say in plain language that all US citizens have the right to make their own medical decisions, with the guidance of their doctor(s), in private and without outside interference from family, friends, strangers, or the government.
This is of urgent importance before any more preventable deaths occur. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
