Reject “Make Elections Great Again”

To: Sen. Hyde-Smith, Sen. Wicker, Rep. Ezell

From: A verified voter in Bay Saint Louis, MS

February 6

This legislation, formally titled the Make Elections Great Again Act, represents a direct and unacceptable threat to the constitutional right to vote. It would impose rigid federal mandates that restrict access to the ballot, concentrate power away from states and local election officials, and introduce new mechanisms for disenfranchisement under the guise of election integrity. The bill’s strict federal identification requirements, mandated voter roll purges, prohibitions on widely used mail voting practices, and refusal to count ballots received after Election Day would predictably and disproportionately exclude eligible voters. Elderly citizens, people with disabilities, military and overseas voters, students, rural residents, and low income Americans would bear the brunt of these changes. Large scale eligibility checks tied to imperfect government databases will inevitably lead to lawful voters being removed from the rolls, often without notice or timely recourse. There is no credible evidence of widespread voter fraud that justifies this sweeping federal intervention. Instead, the bill would invite administrative failure, increased litigation, and public confusion while weakening confidence in election outcomes. It would also punish state and local officials for good faith administration of elections by exposing them to expanded legal challenges and federal interference. Congress should reject this bill in its entirety. Lawmakers should publicly oppose it, refuse to advance it through committee or floor votes, and commit to protecting and expanding access to the ballot rather than restricting it. The right to vote is foundational to representative government and must not be conditioned on unnecessary bureaucratic obstacles or partisan objectives. Any member of Congress who values democratic legitimacy should vote against the Make Elections Great Again Act and work instead toward policies that strengthen participation, access, and trust in American elections.
