I am writing to demand you take immediate action to stop what constitutional scholars and historians are calling an unprecedented assault on American democracy. The current administration is systematically dismantling constitutional checks and balances, and Congress has both the authority and the obligation to intervene.
You have the power to stop this. Congress controls federal funding, can block appointments, and possesses investigative and impeachment authority. The question is whether you will use these tools or stand by while constitutional norms collapse.
Recent events demonstrate the urgency. Federal agents have killed two Americans in Minneapolis within weeks, including Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse shot on Saturday. Approximately 3,000 ICE and CBP agents now occupy Minnesota cities, outnumbering the 10 largest local police agencies combined. Governor Tim Walz called the shooting "sickening" and Mayor Jacob Frey demanded to know how many more must die. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker warned that without immediate action to abolish Trump's ICE and ensure a trained force following the law, this could erupt into something vastly worse.
This goes beyond immigration enforcement. Legal observers are being detained without charge, local elected officials roughed up, and schoolchildren teargassed. Federal forces are occupying American cities against the will of local governments and residents.
Congress has multiple mechanisms to respond immediately. You can block ICE funding in appropriations votes this week. You can demand investigations into federal killings of American citizens. You can use oversight authority to compel testimony and documents. You can invoke the Congressional Review Act to overturn unlawful executive actions.
The Constitution gives Congress coequal power with the executive branch. That power means nothing if you refuse to exercise it. I expect you to publicly oppose federal occupation of American cities, vote against ICE funding, and support investigations into these killings. Your constituents are watching to see whether you will defend constitutional governance or enable its destruction through inaction.
