I am writing to urge you to oppose the JUDGES Act, a dangerous piece of legislation that would allow Donald Trump to appoint 22 new federal district court judges if he returns to office. This bill is being presented as a solution to judicial backlogs, but in reality, it would open the door for Trump to stack the courts with loyalists who would enable his efforts to cut essential services, restrict civil liberties, and abuse executive power.
Our federal judiciary is meant to be independent, not a rubber stamp for any president’s agenda—especially one with a history of undermining democratic norms and pushing authoritarian policies. The judiciary has been a critical check on Trump’s overreach in the past.
Expanding his ability to influence it further is reckless and unacceptable.
I understand that some lawmakers are tempted to support this bill to alleviate case backlogs in their states. But there are better solutions that don’t hand more power to a leader with a record of corruption and lawlessness.
Please stand on the right side of history and oppose the JUDGES Act. Now is the time to protect our democracy, not hand it over.
