Urgent Action Needed to Protect Transgender Lives

To: Rep. Andrews, Gov. Whitmer, Sen. Nesbitt

From: A constituent in Stevensville, MI

November 22

I am writing to express my deep concern about the ongoing violence against transgender individuals and to urge you to take immediate action to protect this vulnerable community. Recent data from Transgender Europe and Central Asia (TGEU) reveals a disturbing trend: 281 trans and gender diverse people were murdered between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025. While this number is lower than the previous year's 350 reported killings, experts warn this may indicate growing invisibility in reporting rather than increased safety. Since 2009, TGEU has recorded a staggering 5,322 murders of trans people worldwide. The statistics are particularly alarming for trans people of color, who account for 88% of these cases. Trans women and transfeminine individuals are disproportionately affected, representing 90% of reported murders. Sex workers and activists are especially at risk, comprising 34% and 14% of victims, respectively. These numbers likely underestimate the true scale of violence due to misgendering in reports and lack of comprehensive data. As your constituent, I implore you to take the following actions: 1. Introduce or support legislation that strengthens hate crime protections for transgender individuals. 2. Advocate for improved data collection and reporting on crimes against trans people to ensure accurate tracking and effective response. 3. Support initiatives to decriminalize sex work, which would help protect a significant portion of the trans community at risk. 4. Allocate funding for trans-specific support services, including mental health resources and safe housing options. 5. Promote education and awareness programs to combat transphobia and foster understanding in our communities. The Trans Day of Remembrance on November 20th serves as a somber reminder of the lives lost and the urgent need for change. I ask that you use your position to speak out against anti-trans violence and work towards creating a safer, more inclusive society for all gender identities. The time for action is now – lives depend on it.
