Protecting access to affordable health care and addressing food insecurity should be top priorities. The proposed Medicaid cuts in the Republican bill would jeopardize health coverage for millions of low-income Americans, leading to worse health outcomes and thousands of preventable deaths each year according to a Harvard study. Stripping away Medicaid not only undoes recent progress in reducing uninsured rates, but undermines a program proven to improve physical and mental well-being while reducing financial strain. Furthermore, many Medicaid recipients are children, elderly, disabled, or working adults - not able-bodied adults refusing employment as claimed. Simultaneously, the pandemic and economic downturn have increased food insecurity for families nationwide. A robust social safety net providing health care access and nutrition assistance is crucial for the wellbeing of our most vulnerable communities. I urge prioritizing policies that strengthen rather than dismantle vital programs like Medicaid and SNAP to ensure all Americans can lead healthy, productive lives.
