I am writing to express my deep concern regarding DOGE’s overreach into the governance and operations of Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU). As one of only two federally operated tribal colleges in the United States, HINU serves a critical role in the education and cultural preservation of Native American students. However, recent actions by DOGE threaten the university’s autonomy and its ability to serve Indigenous students effectively. Federal intervention in HINU’s leadership, funding, and curriculum must be handled with the utmost respect for tribal sovereignty and the university’s unique mission. Any efforts to impose unnecessary bureaucratic control risk undermining the school’s ability to provide culturally relevant education and support services to Native students. I urge you to take action to ensure that HINU remains protected from undue interference, allowing it to fulfill its historic and vital mission. Please advocate for HINU’s sovereignty by supporting legislation or oversight measures that reinforce tribal self-determination in education. I urge you to work with tribal leaders, HINU faculty, students, and alumni to ensure that decisions about the university’s future are made with their voices at the forefront. Thank you for your time and attention to this important matter. I appreciate your commitment to upholding the rights of Indigenous communities and ensuring that Haskell Indian Nations University remains a beacon of education for Native students. I look forward to your response and to seeing your support for HINU’s continued success.
