Act now to protect humanitarian aid to Gaza

To: Sen. Merkley, Rep. Dexter, Sen. Wyden

From: A constituent in Portland, OR

October 2

Israeli forces have illegally intercepted the humanitarian flotilla en route to deliver vital food, aid, and medical support to the Gaza Strip, amidst what the United Nations has concluded is a genocide. More than 40 boats carrying peaceful activists and medical workers have been blocked from reaching Palestine’s shoreline, in another extension of Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza. Hundreds of activists from 44 countries on the flotilla now risk forcible illegal transfer to detention in Israeli custody in the UN-designated apartheid state, where previous activists have been stripped, humiliated, and abused. A flotilla interception in 2010 saw Israeli forces kill ten activists and wound 30 more whilst sailing to deliver humanitarian aid, highlighting the urgency of your attention to this current situation. Israel has no legal right to intercept these ships or to forcibly detain and transfer the activists on board against their will. You must ensure their safety and ensure their continued passage to Gaza to deliver this life-saving aid to Palestinians enduring a famine and genocide. Act now,
