Halt "Alligator Alcatraz" Everglades prison, preserve ecological wonder

To: Rep. Tomkow, Sen. Burton, Gov. DeSantis

From: A constituent in Davenport, FL

July 1

The planned "Alligator Alcatraz" immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades is an ecological disaster waiting to happen. Converting a remote airstrip into a massive detention facility will irreparably damage this fragile ecosystem, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site home to countless endangered species. Paving over portions of the Everglades for a high-security prison amounts to ecological vandalism that jeopardizes the drinking water supply for millions of Floridians. Environmental groups like the Sierra Club, Friends of the Everglades, and the Center for Biological Diversity have rightly sued to halt this unlawful construction in the heart of the Everglades. Prioritizing profits over environmental protection puts corporate interests ahead of the public good. We must preserve our natural wonders, not destroy them to imprison vulnerable migrants. I urge you to oppose this unconscionable project that sacrifices the Everglades at the altar of inhumane immigration policies rooted in hatred rather than compassion. Protect our planet, not corporate prisons that defile it.
