Pass Rep. Pallone’s Grocery Reform and Safety Act

To: Sen. Murray, Sen. Cantwell, Rep. Larsen

From: A constituent in Clinton, WA

December 2

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding efforts by the processed food industry to undermine public health safeguards, and to urge you to prioritize the well-being of our communities over the interests of special interests. I am particularly worried about attempts to prevent states from implementing crucial protections like banning harmful food dyes and reducing the presence of ultra-processed foods in school lunches. It’s vital that states retain the autonomy to address the specific dietary needs and health concerns of their populations. I also object to proposals that would further weaken the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) authority to regulate food additives. The "Better Food Disclosure Act," sponsored by Senator Roger Marshall, appears to undermine Congress’s original intent of the 1958 Food Additives law and would perpetuate the flawed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) loophole. I strongly encourage you to reject the "Better Food Disclosure Act" and instead support Rep. Frank Pallone's Grocery Reform and Safety Act. Additionally, I urge you to advocate for Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., to fulfill his commitment to close the GRAS loophole through administrative action. The FDA already possesses the legal authority, as outlined in Congress’s 1958 law, to enforce these standards – an action that is long overdue. Thank you for your time and consideration of this important matter.
