I am writing to ask for your support of SB 1193. This legislation will permit local taxing authorities to include Hazmat Responders in the eligible list of emergency responders for local earned income and/or property tax credits. Hazmat Responders are volunteer members of one of the commonwealth’s certified hazardous materials response teams. Many are affiliated with local fire and EMS departments but some are only volunteer with hazmat teams. Those affiliated with fire and EMS perform additional volunteer work in their duties with the certified hazmat teams. This bill would permit local authorities to provide tax credits as they deem appropriate. These Hazmat Responders provide a vital service to the commonwealth and maintain rigorous safety and training requirements.
