I am writing to express my deep concern about the Army’s recent policy change that could lead to soldiers being discharged for having a medical shaving profile, specifically related to pseudofolliculitis barbae. This condition affects a significant number of Black men and is recognized as a medical issue, not a disciplinary problem.
There is no justification for removing service members based on a medical condition that does not impact their ability to perform their duties. This policy disproportionately targets Black soldiers and appears to be racially discriminatory in both effect and intent. Facial hair and razor bumps have no impact on a soldier’s dedication, skills, or readiness to serve this country.
Policies like this weaken morale, erode trust, and reinforce systems of exclusion at a time when we should be working toward a more equitable and inclusive military. I urge you to call on the Department of Defense to review and reverse this policy. Every American who is willing and able to serve their country should be allowed to do so without being punished for medical conditions beyond their control.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
