I am writing as your constituent from Oakdale, California, to urge you to vote NO on the SAVE America Act and related legislation — including the SAVE Act and the MEGA Act — that would impose extreme new barriers on Americans' ability to vote.
Our democracy functions best when every eligible citizen can participate. The SAVE America Act would require burdensome documentation to register, vote at the polls, and cast mail-in ballots — requirements more onerous than nearly any state voter ID law currently in effect. More than 21 million Americans lack access to the documents these bills demand, meaning nearly 10% of voting-age Americans would face significant new obstacles to the ballot.
Strong safeguards already ensure that only U.S. citizens vote in federal elections. Voters must swear to their eligibility when registering, and lying about citizenship carries serious consequences including fines, imprisonment, and deportation. This legislation is a solution in search of a problem — one that would harm millions of lawful voters.
The SAVE America Act also raises serious privacy concerns, forcing every state to submit its voter registration list to the Department of Homeland Security for comparison against an error-ridden federal database, with no restrictions on how that sensitive data could be used afterward. These bills would also mandate voter purges based on unreliable data, and threaten election workers with up to five years in prison for assisting a voter with registration — even if that voter is a fully eligible citizen.
I urge you to stand up for the freedom to vote and oppose these dangerous proposals. Please protect the rights of all eligible Americans, including your constituents here in Oakdale.
Thank you for your consideration.
