Stop the Illegal War—Where Is Congressional Authority?

To: Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Carter

From: A constituent in Leander, TX

April 12

I am writing as your constituent to demand immediate, forceful action and answers regarding the President’s unauthorized and reckless military offensive against Iran. Under Article I of the Constitution, the power to declare war belongs to Congress—full stop. Yet by all credible accounts, the administration has launched military strikes against a sovereign nation without that authorization. This is not a gray area. It is a direct violation of the Constitution and a dangerous erosion of the rule of law. Even more alarming, American service members are already paying the price. U.S. troops have been killed and wounded in a conflict they were sent into without clear justification and without the consent of the people’s representatives. Pentagon briefings reportedly confirm there was no concrete intelligence of an imminent Iranian attack prior to these strikes. If true, this means American lives are being risked—and lost—without necessity, without transparency, and without lawful authority. And while this unfolds, the Commander in Chief is attending UFC fights in Miami, appearing at high-dollar events, and surrounding himself with wealthy donors. Let me be clear: American troops are dying overseas in a war he chose to start, and he is spending his time at entertainment events and political functions. This is not just tone-deaf—it is an insult to every service member and family sacrificing for this country. Where is the urgency? Where is the accountability? Where is Congress? You cannot remain silent while constitutional war powers are ignored and American lives are treated as expendable. I demand immediate, public answers: 1. Has Congress authorized this military action against Iran—yes or no? 2. If not, what immediate steps are you taking to halt unauthorized hostilities and reassert Congress’s constitutional authority under the War Powers Resolution? 3. What is the current status of U.S. forces in the region, and what concrete measures are being taken to prevent further casualties and escalation? 4. What investigations and oversight actions will you initiate to determine how and why this illegal war began? This is a defining moment. Either Congress defends its constitutional role, or it allows it to be permanently stripped away. Either you stand up for the lives of American troops, or you stand by while they are placed in harm’s way without cause. The American people are watching. We expect courage, not silence. We expect action, not excuses. I demand a prompt and substantive response detailing exactly what you will do to end this unlawful conflict and protect American lives.
