I have serious concerns regarding the administrations plans for a $200 million, 90,000‑sq ft ballroom on White House grounds.
Even though funding will be provided solely by private sources, no oversight structure or naming details have been provided. The scope of the project would displace multiple West Wing offices, including those historically occupied by the First Lady, and represents the first substantive structural expansion of the Executive Mansion since the Truman Balcony in 1948.
I urge you to consider asking key questions or pressing for hearings on the following:
1. What specific agreements exist to ensure no taxpayer funds are used in any part of this $200 million project?
2. How is private funding being audited, disclosed, and regulated, especially when tied to political figures?
3. What impact will displacement and modernization of the East Wing have on essential White House functions and staffing?
4. What architectural reviews, historic preservation assessments, and security concerns are being addressed as part of this expansion?
Even privately funded construction on publicly owned property merits Congressional oversight. I respectfully request that you take action, such as convening a review or seeking formal proposals to ensure transparency and public accountability.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I believe Americans deserve clarity and accountability for major changes to national heritage structures—even when no direct public dollars are involved.
