I oppose Senate Bill 2 creating education savings accounts (ESAs) for private school vouchers because it will divert crucial funding away from public schools, especially those serving low-income communities. While the proposal claims to prioritize low-income families, the high income threshold of $156,000 for a family of four goes well beyond what most would consider low-income. This billion-dollar voucher program threatens to drain resources from already underfunded public school districts that rely on that state funding to provide a quality education. Rather than subsidizing private education for wealthier families, those funds would be better invested in improving options and supporting students within the public school system that serves the vast majority of Texas children. I urge you to reject this misguided voucher scheme and instead focus on fully and equitably funding our public schools.
