Support Multi-Year NASA Funding Authorization and Oppose Fund Impoundment
To: Sen. Schiff, Rep. Chu, Sen. Padilla
From: A constituent in Pasadena, CA
September 3, 2025
I'm writing to you as your constituent in Pasadena, California, to express my strong support for reforming how we fund NASA and ensuring the agency receives its full appropriated funding without impoundment.
The current annual budget cycle creates unnecessary uncertainty for NASA's scientific missions and exploration programs. When scientists and engineers plan missions to Mars or design next-generation telescopes, they're working on timelines that span decades, not fiscal years. Yet every year, these vital projects face potential disruption from budget negotiations and political maneuvering.
This instability doesn't just slow progress. It wastes taxpayer money. When projects stop and start based on yearly funding decisions, we lose momentum, trained teams disperse, and costs ultimately increase. The James Webb Space Telescope's delays, partly due to funding uncertainties over its development, added billions to its final price tag.
I urge you to support legislation that would establish multi-year funding commitments for NASA's core scientific programs. This would allow the agency to plan effectively, negotiate better contracts, and deliver results more efficiently. Additionally, I ask that you oppose any attempts to impound or withhold congressionally appropriated NASA funds. When Congress approves funding for space exploration and scientific research, those funds should reach their intended purpose.
Living near JPL, I see firsthand the incredible work our space program accomplishes when properly supported. These missions inspire our next generation of scientists, drive technological innovation, and expand humanity's understanding of our place in the universe. They deserve funding that matches the scope of their ambitions and the timescales of their work.
Thank you for considering this important issue. I hope I can count on your support for stable, long-term NASA funding.
