Please do not take recess appointments

To: Sen. Vance, Rep. Landsman, Sen. Brown

From: A constituent in Cincinnati, OH

November 18

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to respectfully urge you to oppose the practice of recess appointments and to take a strong stand against allowing the President to bypass the Senate's constitutional role in confirming nominees. Recess appointments, while authorized under the U.S. Constitution, have the potential to undermine the critical system of checks and balances that is fundamental to our democracy. When positions—particularly lifetime appointments to the federal judiciary or other executive roles—are filled without full Senate scrutiny, it diminishes transparency and accountability in our government. This process can lead to the appointment of individuals who have not undergone the thorough vetting process that is essential for maintaining the integrity of our institutions. As you know, the Senate’s "advise and consent" power is a cornerstone of our constitutional framework. By ensuring that appointments go through the proper channels, we safeguard against cronyism, ensure the qualifications of nominees, and maintain the public trust in our political processes. I respectfully ask that you oppose the use of recess appointments and work to ensure that all nominees go through the Senate confirmation process. The stakes are too high, and our democracy requires that the people's elected representatives have a say in the appointments that shape the direction of our nation. Thank you for your time and for your continued commitment to upholding the principles of our Constitution. I look forward to your response and to seeing your leadership on this important issue.
