Protect Democratic Process and Address Critical Issues in Special Session

To: Gov. Abbott, Sen. King, Rep. McQueeney, Lt. Gov. Patrick

From: A verified voter in Fort Worth, TX

September 3

The ongoing special session of the Texas Legislature demands immediate attention to protect our democratic processes and address critical issues facing our state. I urge you to resist any attempts to punish legislators for exercising their lawful right to break quorum. This tactic, while controversial, is a legitimate tool of legislative minority protection that has been used by both parties throughout our state's history. The focus on retaliatory measures against lawmakers who broke quorum is a dangerous distraction from the pressing matters at hand. Instead of engaging in partisan power plays, our legislature should be addressing the real needs of Texans, such as disaster response and youth camp safety in light of the recent tragic deaths at Camp Mystic. I am deeply concerned about the extreme rhetoric surrounding medical issues, particularly the mischaracterization of Mifepristone as "poisonous." Such language is not only scientifically inaccurate but also potentially harmful to public health discourse. As my representative, I expect you to base your decisions on factual, medical evidence rather than inflammatory rhetoric. Time is of the essence. With Speaker Burrows aiming to complete Governor Abbott's agenda by Labor Day weekend, it is crucial that all items on the special session agenda receive thorough consideration and a fair vote. This includes addressing redistricting, a process that should prioritize fair representation for all Texans rather than partisan advantage. I also urge you to support immediate disaster relief funding. While Governor Abbott's office claims existing funds must last two years, the safety and recovery of our communities cannot wait. Proactive measures now can prevent more costly damage in the future. As your constituent, I implore you to remember that you work for the people of Texas, not party leadership or the President. Stand firm against any legislation that seeks to silence dissent or undermine our democratic institutions. Ensure that this special session results in meaningful action on disaster response, fair redistricting, and youth safety, rather than becoming a platform for political retaliation. The integrity of our legislative process and the well-being of all Texans depend on your principled leadership during this critical time.
