I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to defend one of the cornerstones of our democracy: the separation of powers. The Constitution deliberately divides authority among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches to prevent any one person or office from accumulating unchecked power. That balance is not just a principle — it is the very structure that protects our republic.
In recent years, Congress has too often failed to exercise its full constitutional authority, particularly in response to executive overreach under former President Donald Trump. His actions regarding the federal budget, unilateral tariffs, military engagement, and even disregard for the institutions of our government—including the White House itself—were stark reminders of why strong congressional oversight is essential.
When a president diverts funds without congressional approval, imposes tariffs as a personal tool of leverage, or engages militarily without proper authorization, it undermines both the rule of law and the role of the people’s representatives. No executive, regardless of party, should be allowed to wield such powers without accountability.
It is imperative that Congress reassert its constitutional duties:
Control of the purse strings: Ensure that all budgetary decisions reflect the will of Congress, not unilateral executive directives.
Authority over commerce: Reclaim the legislative role in setting and approving tariffs that affect American workers and industries.
Power to declare war: Demand congressional authorization for any military engagement, reaffirming that war powers belong to the legislature, not the president.
Protection of democratic institutions: Stand firmly against any attempt—literal or symbolic—to degrade or destabilize the seat of our government or the norms that sustain it.
Our democracy depends on elected officials who put constitutional duty above partisan loyalty. I urge you to use your office to restore the proper balance of powers and to ensure that no president—past, present, or future—can act without the checks envisioned by the Founders.
Thank you for your service and your commitment to protecting the integrity of our democratic system.
