No One Is Above the Law: Investigate Trump’s Tariff Actions

To: Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt

From: A verified voter in Kansas City, MO

April 10

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding what appears to be blatant and criminal market manipulation linked to former President Donald Trump’s use of tariff announcements. It has become increasingly evident that he has turned tariffs on and off—seemingly on a whim, but always with enough advanced notice for his wealthy associates to make strategic financial moves. These actions give the distinct impression of insider manipulation of the markets. If these changes are coordinated in advance with close allies for personal financial gain, that is not only unethical—it may be illegal. This kind of behavior undermines the very foundation of our free-market system, betrays the public trust, and tilts the playing field in favor of billionaires and insiders. It also hurt everyday Americans who have their life savings and 401ks in the market. How is it okay for Donald Trump to play games with the market at the risk of the American people? They shouldn’t have their money stolen because of his reckless actions. I believe strongly that no one, not even a former president, is above the law. These actions must be investigated thoroughly and transparently. If there is evidence of criminal wrongdoing or a violation of federal ethics and financial regulations, Donald Trump must be held accountable. I urge you to look into this matter and do everything within your power to launch or support a formal investigation. The American people deserve answers—and justice. Thank you for your time and for your continued service.
