Oppose Tariffs on European Allies and Threats to Greenland's Sovereignty

January 18

I am writing to urge you to oppose the announced 10% tariffs on the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland set to begin February 1, 2025, and escalate to 25% from June 1, 2025. These tariffs, imposed in response to European opposition to plans to take control of Greenland, threaten our most critical security alliance and will directly harm American families and businesses. Greenland is part of the Danish Realm, and its future must be decided by Greenlanders and Danes, not through economic coercion. Thousands have demonstrated in Denmark and Nuuk demanding respect for Greenland's right to self-determination. Camilla Siezing, chair of the Joint Association Inuit, made clear they are protesting "against American statements and ambitions to annex Greenland." This is not our territory to claim. These tariffs undermine NATO at the worst possible moment. As EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned, these threats "play into the hands of China and Russia" who "benefit from divisions among allies." Republican Senator Thom Tillis stated the tariffs are "great for Putin, Xi and other adversaries who want to see NATO divided." A bipartisan congressional delegation, including Senator Tillis and Democrat Senator Jeanne Shaheen, issued a joint statement affirming there is "no need, or desire, for a costly acquisition or hostile military takeover of Greenland" when allies are eager to work together on Arctic security. The economic consequences for Americans will be severe. The Republican-led House foreign affairs committee criticized prioritizing "foreign escapades" over affordable healthcare, noting the tariffs "will only further raise costs for the American people." European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa warned that "tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral." The European Parliament is halting ratification of the EU-US trade deal in response. I urge you to publicly oppose these tariffs and any threats to Greenland's sovereignty. Our security and prosperity depend on strong alliances, not hostile takeovers of allied territory.
