Do not confirm Trump's next Attorney General nominee until Congress has guarantees that the Justice Department will return to impartially serving the American people. Pam Bondi's firing makes clear that the problem isn't just one person—it's the directive coming from the White House.
Bondi's tenure was marked by extraordinary misconduct. She covered up Trump's connections to Jeffrey Epstein while failing to prosecute anyone involved in Epstein's crimes. She used the Justice Department for political retribution with cases that grand juries rejected. DOJ attorneys under her watch ignored court orders and lied to judges. She dropped 23,000 criminal cases, including terrorism and white-collar crimes, while protecting Trump's allies.
Trump fired her because she wasn't aggressive enough at imprisoning his opponents. NBC reports he doesn't think she executed on his vision. The frontrunner to replace her is Lee Zeldin, who has nearly abandoned enforcement of environmental law at the EPA and has endorsed prosecuting an FBI deputy director for investigating Trump.
The next nominee will be even more willing to weaponize federal law enforcement. Congress must exercise its authority and refuse to rubber stamp this replacement.
