Congress needs to push back on Trump's executive order targeting grey and Mexican wolf protections. Delisting these animals before they've genuinely recovered isn't just bad for ecosystems, it's a public safety issue. Research shows that wolves keep deer away from roadways, directly reducing car-deer collisions. Removing wolves puts drivers at greater risk. The justification for this order doesn't hold up. Wolf predation on livestock is rare, and ranchers already receive up to 100% compensation for any losses under the existing system. There were only 319 Mexican wolves in the wild as of 2025, up from four in 1998, but nowhere near recovered. As Claire Musser of the Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project put it: "Weakening federal protections now would put decades of recovery work at risk." That's 27 years of conservation progress that could be undone to placate a handful of ranchers. The Endangered Species Act exists for exactly this reason. Use your authority to defend it, block any action by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to delist these wolves, and make clear that Congress will not allow executive overreach to gut environmental law.
