By now we have all seen the appalling videos showing an ICE agent shooting a woman in Minneapolis to death.  Emotions have been running high as individuals with their own reasons and perspectives tell us what they believe we are seeing in those videos. An investigation must be---and must be perceived---to be fair, impartial, and thorough if it is to be of any use to the woman who was shot, the agent who fired his weapon into her body, the community that is reeling from this escalating situation, and our nation that is hearing far too many conclusions before a credible investigation by an appropriate agency has been conducted. Initially the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (MNBCA) was asked to help the FBI investigate, but this afternoon the MNBCA issued saving that federal officials "reversed course" and that the FBI alone would investigate. This is unacceptable. According to ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations records shared with the Cato Institute, in 2025, 2,840 FBI agents were diverted to ICE enforcement operations. That is one in five FBI agents. The FBI cannot effectively investigate itself, and it cannot effectively investigate an agency it has been diverted to serve. Without collaboration or buy-in from Minnesota Law Enforcement, any investigation of this shooting will serve only to reaffirm the preformed conclusions of those already blaming the dead and to inflame those who saw an unnecessary escalation against a now-deceased civilian who was not a target of this ICE operation. 1. Hold hearings. Invite MNBCA to explain what their role would be in an investigation and why it matters. 2. Impeach Secretary Noem. Her ICE operations have been dangerous, designed to escalate, and more tragedies will happen on her watch. 3. Rein in the chaos. None of these constant threats, abuses of our communities, and uncertainties about daily life are normal and they should not be the price of being in a political in-circle.
