I am writing to urge your immediate support for the comprehensive revitalization plan proposed for downtown Los Angeles. Our city's core, which represents just 1% of LA's land mass but generates a third of its business, parking, and hotel tax base, is facing a critical juncture that demands swift and decisive action.
The pandemic, coupled with immigration raids, tariffs, curfews, and persistent homelessness, has dealt a severe blow to downtown LA's vitality. Once-thriving office towers on Bunker Hill now stand largely vacant, leading to the closure of established restaurants and a visible increase in urban decay, including widespread graffiti. This decline not only affects local businesses but also threatens the economic foundation of our entire city.
The Central City Association has outlined 90 focused actions that I believe are crucial for downtown's recovery. These include increasing police foot patrols to enhance safety and implementing more effective homeless intervention strategies. Additionally, we must explore innovative solutions such as converting unused office spaces into much-needed housing, both market-rate and affordable.
Looking ahead, the $2.62 billion expansion of the Convention Center, planned in preparation for the 2028 LA Olympics, presents a golden opportunity to catalyze downtown's resurgence. However, we cannot afford to wait until then to address the current crisis.
I implore you to prioritize this revitalization effort. By acting now, we can leverage downtown LA's existing infrastructure and potential to create a vibrant, safe, and economically thriving city center that benefits all Angelenos. The future of our city's heart hangs in the balance, and your leadership in this matter is crucial.
