I am writing to urge you to support H. Con. Res. 38, the bipartisan war powers resolution that would prevent the Trump administration from launching military strikes on Iran without congressional authorization.
The Trump administration has announced airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, escalating a conflict that threatens to draw the United States into another unauthorized war in the Middle East. This action bypasses the constitutional requirement that Congress, not the executive branch alone, holds the power to declare war. The War Powers Resolution exists precisely to prevent this kind of unilateral military action.
H. Con. Res. 38 invokes the War Powers Resolution to reassert Congress's constitutional authority over decisions of war and peace. This is not a partisan issue. Members from both parties have introduced resolutions in the House and Senate recognizing that military escalation in Iran requires proper congressional debate and authorization. The consequences of unauthorized strikes could include broader regional conflict, loss of American lives, and enormous financial costs borne by taxpayers.
History has shown the dangers of entering military conflicts without full congressional deliberation. The American people deserve representatives who will fulfill their constitutional duty to authorize military action rather than ceding that power to any administration. Your constituents need to know that their voices matter in decisions that could send service members into harm's way and commit our nation to another protracted conflict.
I am asking you to cosponsor and vote in favor of H. Con. Res. 38. Congress must maintain its war powers authority and prevent military escalation that lacks proper authorization. The constitutional separation of powers depends on your willingness to exercise the authority granted to the legislative branch. Please take a public stand to prevent unauthorized military strikes on Iran.
