Protect our Data Privacy, Protect our Communities

To: Sen. Berghmans, Gov. Grisham, Rep. Parajón

From: A verified voter in Albuquerque, NM

January 27

New Mexico has strong protections for LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, and those seeking or using reproductive healthcare. However, without these protections, we remain vulnerable to a hostile federal government and bad actors in neighboring states—especially in our border communities, where New Mexicans frequently cross state lines to shop, see a doctor, visit family, or attend church. At the same time, social media platforms, online businesses, phone apps, and Big Tech collect vast amounts of personal data without our explicit consent. This information is largely unregulated, meaning companies can do whatever they want with it—including selling it to anyone willing to buy. As a result, our data is already being used to track us, hand us over to government agencies, and reveal our identities. CHISPA is the protection we need. It ensures that big corporations, the federal government, and out-of-state prosecutors cannot weaponize our data to target trans individuals, immigrants, those receiving gender-affirming care, or people accessing reproductive healthcare. These protections are essential to safeguarding our privacy and freedoms in an increasingly data-driven world. Please support legislation for data privacy and consumer protection in the State of New Mexico
