I am writing today to express my deep appreciation for Senator Todd Young’s leadership in calling for an investigation into recent events in Minnesota. His action demonstrates a commitment to accountability and responsible governance that deserves commendation.
It is my firm belief that the Indiana delegation must present a united front on this critical issue. Therefore, I urge you, along with Senator Braun and my district’s Representative, to publicly join Senator Young in this call for a thorough, transparent investigation. Hoosiers expect their elected officials to stand together in demanding answers and oversight when serious questions arise about the conduct of federal agencies.
However, a review alone is insufficient. The reported conduct is symptomatic of a deeper, systemic failure within U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The agency has repeatedly demonstrated an inability to wield its considerable authority with the professionalism, restraint, and respect for human dignity required of an organization tasked with such sensitive duties. As such, I urge you to take the necessary next step: refusing to authorize any further funding for ICE in its current form.
Public trust in this agency has been irrevocably broken. We cannot continue to fund an organization that has shown itself incapable of operating within the bounds of its mandate and our core values. Before any further resources are allocated, we must see a complete overhaul. This requires, at a minimum, new leadership committed to fundamental reform and the establishment of a rigorous, mandatory retraining program for all personnel, centered on constitutional rights, de-escalation, and proportional use of force.
Only with these concrete steps—a united call for investigation, a halt to unchecked funding, and a mandate for sweeping structural change—can we begin to rebuild the integrity of our immigration enforcement system. I strongly urge you to act.
