Texas Voters Deserve Representation: No to Partisan Redistricting!

To: Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick, Sen. Zaffirini, Rep. Flores

From: A verified voter in Austin, TX

July 24

Texans deserve fair representation. In the last three presidential elections, Democratic candidates earned between 43 and 46 percent of the vote statewide. Yet Democrats hold zero U.S. Senate seats from Texas and only 12 out of 38 House seats. That means nearly half the voters in Texas, around 8.4 million people in 2024, get just one-third of the representation in Congress. This is not a fair or democratic outcome. Over 95 percent of Texas’s population growth since 2010 has come from Black, Latino, and other communities of color who are consistently underrepresented. Most Texans want change. A recent Politico poll showed that 63 percent of voters, including 41 percent of Republicans, oppose any mid-decade redistricting. Yet this legislature is doing it anyway, ignoring public opinion and pushing new maps designed to lock in one party’s power. Voting rights scholars and legal experts have called these actions discriminatory and anti-democratic. These maps dilute minority voting strength and may violate the Voting Rights Act. We demand you stop the redraw, pass laws ensuring independent, nonpartisan redistricting, and make fair representation the goal. Texas should not be a place where politicians choose their voters and silence millions in the process. If you fail to act, history will remember that you chose power over people and partisanship over democracy.
