Iowa Senate file 2435 regarding chronic absenteeism is an overreaching bill that fails to acknowledge that a pandemic is still in progress, and that students have chronic illnesses that require regular days away from school for appointments or rest. This bill will disproportionately punish families who are already struggling with illnesses and disabilities. This law seems rushed, cruel, and poorly considered. Repeal this bill or amend it to reflect the reality of an increasing number of Iowa families. The corona virus remains as active and disabling as ever, and this bill sentences more people to lives of suffering and marginalization.
