URGENT: Stop dismantling of oceanic sensors!
To: Sen. Merkley, Sen. Wyden
From: A constituent in Portland, OR
June 7
I am writing to demand that you immediately intervene to halt the National Science Foundation's dismantling of the Ocean Observatories Initiative. Decommissioning these 900+ deep-sea sensors directly compromises our national security, strips away critical early warning systems for natural disasters, and actively puts American lives at risk.
You took a solemn oath to protect the American people from threats both foreign and domestic. Allowing this vital infrastructure to be destroyed—infrastructure that costs next to nothing to maintain relative to its immense value—is a direct failure of that sworn duty.
I urge you to fight this tooth and nail. Use your oversight authority to freeze this funding decision and protect your constituents before this irreplaceable safety net is lost and American citizens die, vital economies are damaged and national security is compromised as a result.
