Oppose White House Rewriting of January 6 History

To: Rep. Wied, Sen. Johnson, Sen. Baldwin

From: A verified voter in Goodman, WI

February 20

I am writing to urge you to publicly condemn the Trump White House's new government website that rewrites the history of the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. This unprecedented misuse of an official government platform to legitimize election denial and discredit the rule of law demands immediate congressional response. The website, titled "January 6: A Date Which Will Live in Infamy," falsely portrays the violent assault on Congress as a story of "peaceful patriotic protesters" who were unfairly persecuted. It dismisses the findings of multiple bipartisan investigations and hundreds of criminal cases upheld by judges across the country. The site claims Democrats "fabricated an insurrection narrative" and that those prosecuted were victims of a "weaponized" justice system. These claims directly contradict established facts. More than 140 law enforcement officers were injured that day. Dozens of courts rejected Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Criminal verdicts established that rioters violently breached the Capitol to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden's presidential victory, and judges found that extremist groups planned and coordinated parts of the attack. None of these facts appear on the White House website. As House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated, we cannot allow extremists to whitewash their treachery. Political commentator Mehdi Hasan called the website "insanely dishonest, anti-American and Orwellian," noting it blames police for the violence while omitting mention of injured officers or rioters who admitted in court to assaulting them. By presenting a highly selective narrative as historical fact on an official government platform, this administration is attempting to reshape public memory of a direct attack on our democratic process. I urge you to speak out forcefully against this dangerous distortion of history and to support any legislative measures that preserve the factual record of January 6. Our democracy depends on a shared commitment to truth.
