An Open Letter

To: Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Self

From: A constituent in Princeton, TX

April 30

The right to legal counsel and due process are fundamental principles enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Lawyers play a vital role in upholding these rights by providing legal assistance without fear of retaliation or harassment from any governmental entity. The reported termination of Clay Jackson for offering basic legal guidance to an immigrant family is highly concerning and calls into question the company's commitment to protecting civil liberties. It is imperative that attorneys can freely carry out their ethical and professional duties without undue influence or threats from external forces. A robust legal system demands that lawyers feel secure in advising clients, regardless of their immigration status or background. Failing to safeguard this independence undermines the integrity of the judicial process and erodes public trust in our system of justice. I urge you to take a firm stance against any attempts to intimidate or punish legal professionals for upholding their sworn duties and constitutional obligations. Defending the rights of vulnerable populations should be championed, not condemned.
