I am writing to express my unequivocal opposition to the so-called SAVE Act. Beneath its misleading title, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to erect new barriers between eligible American citizens and the ballot box. This bill does not safeguard democracy—it sabotages it. Requiring documentary proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections is not only unnecessary and redundant, it is also discriminatory and dangerous. Every credible study and investigation—including by Republican-led commissions—has shown that voter fraud, especially by non-citizens, is virtually nonexistent. The SAVE Act, then, is a solution in search of a problem—crafted not to protect our elections, but to suppress legitimate votes. This legislation would disproportionately harm low-income citizens, the elderly, and communities of color—Americans who are citizens, but who may not have immediate access to the documents now being demanded. Naturalized citizens, in particular, would be unfairly burdened and targeted, despite having the same right to vote as those born in the U.S. Let’s be clear: this is not about “election integrity.” This is about fearmongering, exclusion, and manipulation of the democratic process to silence voices that some politicians find inconvenient. Democracy should be about inclusion, not exclusion. About building participation, not erecting walls to block it. I urge you to stand firmly against the SAVE Act and any similar legislation that seeks to restrict the sacred right to vote. Support measures that expand access to the ballot—not shrink it. The future of our democracy depends on it.
