Any worries in Congress about the president taking all your lawmaker powers away?
Reading about the whole TikTok situation it seems apparent that y’all are becoming increasing irrelevant. And at this point it’s unclear how you will, or can, ever reestablish yourselves as a co-equal branch of government.
The president has superseded Congress and the law they passed by extending again and again the deadline by which TikTok has to divest Chinese ownership, even though, apparently, under the law as passed, he was allowed one extension.
Did y’all approve those additional extensions?
Not only is the TikTok can being eternally kicked down the road, and deadlines blown past more than once for the law to take effect, but the Trump DOJ has issued letters to Google and Apple etc. that they don’t need to pay attention to the law at all. And that the DOJ will not go after them for any violation of the law if they continue to provide the TikTok app to consumers. Nudge nudge wink wink.
So the TikTok legislation is not being enforced. But the Trump administration isn’t just putting enforcement on the back burner. It is also saying that Congress can’t tell Trump what to do (even in areas, like foreign commerce, where Congress has constitutional authority to legislate), that he will decide when a law becomes effective, that he will be the arbiter of how to interpret the law and whether someone is in violation of it, and that he will decide whether violators should be punished or, frankly, whether it should even be a law at all.
In short, it makes Trump a legislator, judge, jury, executioner, as well as the chief executive.
Congrats. I think y’all finally achieved the goal of fiscal austerity by supplicating yourselves out of the picture entirely.
Surely you must see that we’re becoming a one-man government? Are you sure Donald Trump is your choice give all of America’s power to?
This is not what we the people voted for. This is not going anywhere we should be going.
Y’all better wake up.
