Oppose SAVE Act and MEGA Act - Protect Voting Rights

To: Sen. Grassley, Sen. Ernst, Rep. Nunn

From: A verified voter in Des Moines, IA

February 13

I urge you to oppose the SAVE America Act and the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act. These bills would prevent millions of eligible Americans from voting. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, 21 million Americans lack readily accessible citizenship documents like passports or birth certificates. These bills would require such documents to register or update voter registration. The bills would: • Eliminate online and mail voter registration • Mandate voter purges every 30 days, removing the 90-day quiet period that protects voters before elections • Prohibit universal mail voting used in eight states • Threaten election workers with five years in prison for honest mistakes • Disproportionately impact young voters, voters of color, women, rural voters, and voters with disabilities Non-citizen voting is already illegal and extremely rare. Utah’s review of 2 million voters found one confirmed non-citizen registration and zero instances of non-citizen voting. The Brennan Center found approximately 30 suspected non-citizen votes out of 23.5 million ballots in Louisiana—0.0001 percent. These bills solve a problem that doesn’t exist while creating massive barriers for eligible citizens. I urge you to oppose both bills and protect voting rights
